The view of New York City’s skyline from across the river in New Jersey will look different after a newly announced 55-story building known as 2 World Trade Center is completed.
The building, located at 200 Greenwich Street, is slated to be finished in 2031 and will total 2 million square feet. It will serve as the new global headquarters of American Express and provide office space for up to 10,000 workers.
“Projects of this scale materially strengthen the long-term performance of the World Trade Center campus and the Port Authority’s overall portfolio,” Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Vice Chairman, Jeffrey Lynford, said in a press release.
“Sustained commercial activity on the campus supports reliable revenue that we invest in the transportation network our region relies on every day,” he added.
The new global Amex headquarters will replace the original 2 World Trade Center building, which was one of the two 110-story World Trade Center towers that collapsed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
The original site of both World Trade Center towers is now the 9/11 memorial and museum.
The new 2 World Trade Center project will add 2,000 unionized construction jobs, according to the press release. The new building will be shorter than neighboring One World Trade Center, which has 104 floors.
It will feature more than an acre of outdoor space with “several greenery-filled terraces and gardens and sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline,” according to the announcement.
