Authorities are investigating why a woman dispersed bear spray inside a Lower Manhattan hotel on Monday morning and sickened numerous guests.
According to police sources, the bizarre incident unfolded around 8 a.m. on June 29 inside the DoubleTree Hilton hotel at 8 Stone St. near Broadway. The FDNY and officers from the 1st Precinct rushed to the lodgings after a large group of people had difficulty breathing.
When first responders arrived, they found at least seven people suffering reactions from a chemical irritant. A 39-year-old female and a male victim were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Sources familiar with the investigation report that a woman unleashed the substance inside her room, and the chemical got into the ventilation system, injuring other occupants. Sources said all injuries were minor.
Police wrote on social media that the incident stemmed from a dispute and that they had evacuated the building.
“Police are looking into the use of bear spray inside a hotel after a dispute, and guests have been evacuated from inside the building,” an NYPD post on X read.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
