Brooklyn Man Arrested After Parachuting Off Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

A Brooklyn man was arrested Sunday evening after parachuting off the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and landing in a nearby park, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after the bridge reopened to traffic following the New York City Marathon. Jonathan Warren, 40, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was apprehended by officers after 911 calls reported an “unlicensed aircraft” around 4:56 p.m.

Police from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit arrested Warren at Calvert Vaux Park in Bath Beach, approximately two miles from the bridge. He was charged with reckless endangerment and issued a desk appearance ticket.

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the longest in New York City, is normally closed to pedestrians and bicyclists. The MTA has spent roughly $32 million installing safety fencing along the bridge in 2021 to prevent people from jumping, following a series of suicides in previous years.

Authorities are reminding the public that such stunts are extremely dangerous and illegal.
