Where to picnic in NYC this summer: Top 10 parks ranked by new study

Look no further than a New York City park to enjoy a picnic.

Bike rental provider Holland Bikes sought to find the best parks in New York City for a picnic by creating the NYC Park Picnic Index.

This index evaluated five factors across the 166 parks located in New York City that influence how well-equipped city parks are for a picnic — the park’s size, shade coverage, bike rack access, restroom availability and food concessions. Each park was scored out of 100.

Prospect Park in Brooklyn claimed the top spot as New York City’s best picnic destination, with a score of 74.59 out of 100. The 526-acre park offers strong bike rack provisions, plenty of shaded tree coverage, eight restrooms and ample food concessions.

Of the top 10 best parks for a picnic in New York City, two on Staten Island made the list. Bloomingdale Park was named Staten Island’s best park to enjoy a picnic and the eighth best overall in New York City.

It scored a 57.76 out of 100, according to the index.

Clove Lakes Park was the second best park on Staten Island for a picnic and the 10th best overall in New York City, with a score of 57.66.

“New Yorkers are cycling more than ever, and parks are the natural endpoint of any great bike ride, for people to enjoy some food and drink with friends in the sun,” said Eric van der Zanden, managing director at Holland Bikes. “We found that the city’s most famous parks aren’t necessarily the best to host a picnic, as many are lacking simple infrastructure such as bike racks or toilet facilities, which can really make or break the experience.”

Holland Bikes also ranked each New York City borough by its average park score. According to its analysis, Manhattan parks achieved the highest average score of any borough, with Staten Island at second place.

Queens followed in third place, with Brooklyn in fourth and Bronx trailing last.
