Democrats are anxiously awaiting election results as voters cast ballots in races in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California and Texas in the first major test of President Donald Trump’s second term.
At the eleventh hour, Trump backed Andrew Cuomo’s bid for New York City mayor while labeling frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, as a “communist.”
If Mamdani wins, the president said it’s “highly unlikely” that he gives his hometown any more federal funds than the minimum required, he wrote on Truth Social.
“Donald Trump is threatened by our campaign,” Mamdani fired back on CNN.
Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and Trump’s former DOGE boss, also threw his support behind Cuomo Monday evening.
Key gubernatorial races are taking place in New Jersey and Virginia. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill is facing off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli while Virginia sees pro-Trump candidate Winsome Earle-Sears go head-to-head with center-left candidate Abigail Spanberger.
But the races have been overshadowed by threats from Trump, who said that “election monitors” will be at polling sites — a move Democrats have branded as voter intimidation.
California voters will decide whether to approve a new congressional map that could give Democrats five more seats in the House.
Polls close in Virginia at 7 p.m. ET, in New Jersey at 8 p.m. ET, in New York at 9 p.m. ET, and in California at 8 p.m. PT.

‘No credible bomb threats:’ New Jersey officials speak out after Election Day scare
The state’s attorney general reported bomb threats sent by email to various polling places across half a dozen counties on the morning of Election Day.
“Earlier today, bomb threats were made to several polling sites. Law enforcement has determined there are no credible threats at this time. We are doing everything in our power to protect voters and poll workers and encourage every eligible voter to exercise their right to vote,” Lt. Governor Tahesha Way wrote on X.
Some polling places have reopened, while voters at closed polling sites are being directed to nearby locations, Attorney General Matthew Platkin said.
Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, slammed the threats as a “clear attempt to undermine our democratic system and intimidate New Jerseyans from going to the polls to exercise their right to vote. “
“I’m grateful for law enforcement’s swift response to these threats and for making sure that every voter can safely and securely make their voice heard this Election Day. We will not stand for voter suppression in our state — and I encourage all New Jerseyans to not be deterred as they cast their ballots today,” she wrote on X.

Cuomo bashes both opponents as Election Day voting kicks off
Independent NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo slammed his Democratic rival Zohran Mamdani for touting “TikTok promises” on the campaign trail.
Speaking to Fox & Friends Tuesday morning, the former governor said: “Those promises he put forward in the primary? None of them are real.”
He also bashed GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa, calling him a “spoiler.”
“There’s no chance he can win. But he can make Mamdani a winner,” Cuomo said, then calling Trump’s endorsement “very helpful.”
“If they don’t vote for Sliwa, they would vote for me,” he said.

New Jersey gubernatorial race: What do the polls say?
Democrat Mikie Sherrill leads Republican Jack Ciattarelli 51 to 43 percent, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.
The poll, taken October 30, found that Sherill gained one point compared to the October 15 poll, when she received 50 percent support and Ciattarelli received 44 percent support.
“Will another Democrat assume the reins from Governor Phil Murphy? In the final days of a very combative race, Mikie Sherrill’s 20 percentage point advantage with women fuels her overall lead of 8 points over Jack Ciattarelli,” Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said in a statement.
