As the nation marks America 250 with celebrations across the country, one New York tradition is once again taking center stage on the Fourth of July: the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island.
For more than a century, the competition has drawn thousands of spectators and millions of viewers, turning a 10-minute eating contest into one of the country’s most recognizable Independence Day events.
While the spotlight is on the competitors, the event is also known for the theatrical introductions delivered by Major League Eating Commissioner George Shea.
Shea joined “Mornings On 1” to preview this year’s contest, discuss what fans can expect and explain why the annual event has become such an enduring Fourth of July tradition.
