NEW YORK, N.Y. — New York is among 17 states reporting cases of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness now under federal investigation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says at least 145 people nationwide have gotten sick with cyclosporiasis since May 1. That includes between 31 and 80 people in New York State.
Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness, comes from several species of a microscopic parasite, Cyclospora. Symptoms include watery diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort.
The CDC says most patients did not travel before symptoms began. So far, 20 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. The CDC also says people with healthy immune systems will be able to recover without medical treatment.
The CDC and FDA are working to identify the source of this year’s infections.
