Staten Island Council Member Frank Morano is collecting little pieces of New York City history to bury in a time capsule for 2076. It’s a commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary and a moment in time on Staten Island.

Morano is collecting videos that describe life on Staten Island and hopes for the future. Locals can also apply to put a momento in the capsule.
“I want future Staten Islanders to hear directly from the people who lived through America’s 250th Birthday,” Morano said. “Whether it’s a photograph, a written message, a piece of artwork, or a short video, every submission will help tell the story of our community for generations to come.”
The capsule will be buried on July 8 during a celebration on the South Shore.
It’s not the only way New York will be remembered. The state also contributed to a national time capsule for the country’s 250th, which will be buried at Independence National Historical Park on the Fourth of July. State leaders created a document reflecting on life in New York for the capsule.
Groups like Major League Baseball also contributed to the national time capsule, like the opening day lineup for the 2026 season.
