NORWOOD, Bronx (PIX11) — New York City is in the middle of a heat wave, and Thursday could potentially be the hottest day.
During the early morning hours, temperatures were already in the mid-80s. Add the humidity it feels even hotter. Hundreds of cooling centers are expected to be open across the city.
Temperatures are expected to feel like the triple digits through Saturday.
On Wednesday, people took advantage of city pools to stay cool. They were open until 8:30 p.m., well past the usual 7 p.m. closing time.
At one point, the line to get into Astoria Park Pool stretched through the park.

This heat can be deadly. City officials say on average more than 500 New Yorkers die every year from the heat.
And most heat-related deaths in New York City are from prolonged exposure indoors with no access to air conditioning.
If needed, cooling centers are located at public hospitals, libraries, senior centers, recreation centers and more.
Officials say drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Check on your neighbors, particularly the elderly, sick, or those with disabilities.
If you notice dry skin, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or a rapid heartbeat. It may be a sign of heat-related illness.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to visit one of the many cooling centers on Thursday morning.
