While organizers intended to clear the encampment Wednesday evening, the Binghamton Police Department and Department of Public Works “coordinated a clearing of tents, tables and other temporary structures,” according to Mayor Jared Kraham via Facebook.
The 60 Hawley Street encampment popped up after a deadly fire at the Knights Inn and had been in place for nine days. Binghamton Police passed out letters on Tuesday, giving them a deadline of 6 p.m. Wednesday to clear the area. Organizers said Wednesday they were going to pack their things to protect people’s belongings.
“The work was completed following more than 36 hours notice to those occupying the area. No arrests were made,” Kraham said in his post.
Organizers of the encampment streamed the interaction with police on Facebook, and it appeared peaceful.
