NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — As the temperature rises on the second day of New York City’s heat wave, Con Edison is asking some residents to begin conserving energy.
New Yorkers in the northwest section of the Bronx and the northern tip of Manhattan are being asked to reduce their energy usage while Con Ed crews repair equipment in the area. The energy company has also reduced voltage by 8% in both areas to protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are made.

Affected neighborhoods in the Bronx include those going as far up as the Westchester County line on the north, areas along the Harlem River on the south, those along the Hudson River on the west, areas around Sedgwick Avenue and those along the Bronx River on the east. The advisory particularly impacts those in Riverdale, Marble Hill, Kingsbridge and Van Cortlandt Park.
The affected area in Manhattan includes West 155th Street on the south and stretches to the Harlem River on the north. It also includes areas along the Hudson River on the west and the Harlem River on the east. Customers in the Inwood, Hudson Heights and Washington Heights neighborhoods will be primarily impacted.
During the energy conservation period, customers are asked not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers and microwaves, as well as not charge electric vehicles. Residents are also asked to limit unnecessary use of multiple air conditioners and to set them to the highest comfortable temperature.
It was not immediately made clear when the energy conservation advisory would lift.
