Hosting a dinner party is infinitely more enjoyable with a partner in crime to help curate the playlist and the guest list, keep the conversation and the drinks flowing, and take a load off the planning. Who better than a dear friend to serve as your cohost and cleanup accomplice as the night winds down? That’s the spirit behind Table Mates, where we’ve invited a stellar group of creatives to plan and execute their dream soirees…and let us in on how they do it!
There are few party strategies more quintessentially New York than a highly curated table plated to serve takeout. With the culinary world at your doorstep, why would you ever cook? For interior designer Noah Ruttenberg, one of AD’s New American Voices, and Phantila Phataraprasit, founder of Brooklyn-based furniture brand Sabai, a DIY mentality is central to their hosting style—no matter where the food comes from.
In the lofted kitchen located in the Sabai showroom, modern Murano glassware and vintage flatware artfully coincide on a stainless steel, eye-shaped table designed by Ruttenberg himself. Vases filled with alliums and a carved wooden duck serve as the focal point for the laid-back gathering. Read on for more details on how the pair pulled it off and the thinking behind their casual hosting ethos.

For Phataraprasit, a moment for tea acts as the perfect transition from dinner to dessert.
