CHATEAUGAY, New York (WWNY) – A Chateaugay man is facing fraud and forgery charges after New York State Police say he altered a company check for nearly $19,000 and cashed it at a Plattsburgh bank.

John Patterson, 42, was arrested July 2, 2026, and charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.

Troopers responded to County Route 20 in the town of Constable on June 4, 2026, at approximately 7:20 p.m. for a report of a fraud complaint. An investigation determined Patterson, an employee of Mike’s Barn Painting, altered a company check for $18,961.56 before cashing it at a bank in Plattsburgh.

The investigation was conducted in coordination with the bank’s fraud department and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.

Patterson was arrested and processed at SP Plattsburgh. He was arraigned in the Town of Plattsburgh Court and released on his own recognizance.
