Vanderbilt shares timeline, new details on Manhattan expansion after plan ‘clears the final hurdle’

  • November 4, 2025

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Vanderbilt University is sharing new details on its plans to move to the Big Apple.

The university announced earlier this fall that it is planning to open its first campus build of Nashville through an expansion to Manhattan. On Tuesday, Vanderbilt announced plans to open its New York campus by the fall of 2026.

“Today the New York Board of Regents unanimously approved Vanderbilt’s application for academic programming, which clears the final hurdle in the state’s regulatory process and moves Vanderbilt’s planned expansion from vision to reality,” a press release from the university said.

Next fall, the Chelsea campus will welcome its first students for an undergraduate semester program and a Master of Science in Business and Technology program.

The undergraduate semester program will be made up of mostly juniors and seniors, the university said. They will live in residence halls in Manhattan and “participate in internships, research positions and other project-based learning as they pursue their interests and explore future career opportunities” in addition to their studies.

Vanderbilt plans to offer similar programming over the summer and for “shorter intensives” in the coming years.

The master’s program will consist of curriculum from the university’s Owen Graduate School of Management and Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering. It will “pair technical expertise with business acumen and equip graduates with the skills necessary to advance New York’s growing tech sector and innovation ecosystem.”

“Few cities offer the opportunities for learning and discovery available in New York,” said Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. “We are delighted to join the city’s outstanding higher education community, and we look forward to starting academic programming next year.”
