A Cayuga County sheriff’s deputy is on leave after being charged with sexually assaulting a minor.

Hunter Lawrence, 25, has been arrested by New York State Police for allegedly having multiple sexual encounters with someone under the age of 17.

According to authorities, the encounters happened over an extended period of time while the victim was at different ages.

That resulted in multiple charges. Those include second and third-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child.

State police say they do not believe any of the conduct took place while on duty.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with state police and, per legal requirements, Lawrence was put on paid leave pending the outcome of the criminal case and an internal investigation.
