The incident happened at approximately 12 p.m. at Field 6 at Jones Beach, according to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Jones Beach State Park lifeguards and emergency medical technicians responded immediately after the swimmer was bitten. The victim suffered lacerations to the right foot and was taken to Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital with what officials said were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Swimming was immediately suspended while officials searched the beachfront for dangerous marine life, according to the state.
After no sharks or other dangerous marine life were observed for an hour, swimming resumed but was limited to wading in water up to swimmers’ waists, officials said.
The attack comes one day after a nine-foot shark was spotted at the nearby South Shore beach.
