An NYPD detective is expected to recover after being shot in his protective vest early Sunday, according to authorities.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, officers were parked in an unmarked vehicle on Nostrand Avenue around 4 a.m. when an 18-year-old man approached with a firearm.

The suspect, who fled the scene, was later taken into custody after resisting arrest, leading to the deployment of a Taser, according to police
Officers got out of the vehicle and attempted to engage him before gunfire was exchanged, Tisch said.
Detective Robert Carroll was struck in the back of his ballistic vest, authorities said. X-rays showed a contusion near where the bullet stuck.
A second officer suffered contusions to the face and shoulder, Tisch said.
The suspect, who fled the scene, was later taken into custody after resisting arrest, leading to the deployment of a Taser, according to police.
A 9mm firearm was found at the scene.
Tisch says the officers were on scene as part of the Fourth of July violence reduction plan to address crew violence in the area.
“What happened this morning is another reminder that officers never know what they’ll encounter when they begin a tour. Even what appears to be a routine assignment can turn life threatening in just an instant,” Tisch said on Sunday.
Officers are checking local businesses in the area for surveillance footage of the shooting because there is no body-worn camera footage of the encounter.
