Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission visits New York City as part of Dream Keepers Tour
NEW YORK CITY – New York City is deeply ingrained in America’s history, which is why for their America 250 celebration and Juneteenth celebrations, the Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission felt that NYC was the perfect place to start their Dream Keepers Tour.
“It felt good that I got to see it,” student Braxton Scarbrough said. “It felt good to see one of the biggest pieces about America.”
For many on the trip, it was their first time in the Big Apple, and seeing the figure gifted to America nearly 140 years ago.
“When I saw the Statue of Liberty, I just smiled,” Executive Director Dushun Scarbrough said.
Even over 1,000 miles away in Arkansas, the students understood the importance of what Lady Liberty represents, and what it means to see her in person.
“It means a lot to be on this trip,” student Zaki Cummins said. “Yeah, I can’t believe I’m here right now.”
“It’s very cool, a cool experience and opening up to new things,” student Sh’maurion Walker said.
The whole trip was a true pinch-me moment for these leaders of tomorrow.
“Being here is more thrilling than I thought it would be,” student Darrius Lambery said.
