The Dallas Wings (13-8) continue its road trip with a visit to New York to face the New York Liberty (13-8) on Tuesday night. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the Barclays Center.

The trip marks the second time this season that Dallas has traveled to face the Liberty. The first game in New York was a special one as the Wings made a statement with a 91-76 win over the Liberty on May 24.

The win revealed to the WNBA that things had changed in Dallas after team’s last two seasons resulted in picking first in the WNBA Draft. Dallas has kept playing well this season and earned back-to-back victories to start its four-game road trip. The first win was a 86-83 win over the Connecticut Sun while the second was a 89-76 win over the Toronto Tempo.

New York reminded people of why the team is a favorite to win the WNBA title with wins against the Las Vegas Aces and the Minnesota Lynx in the last two games.

Analyzing the last two Liberty wins

In the last two games, New York has defeated the top two teams in the W. First, the Liberty defeated the Aces in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship on Tuesday. Then, the Liberty defeated the Lynx on Friday in a 99-86 victory.

In both games, the Liberty showed their dangerous offense. New York shot 47% from the field against Las Vegas and shot 58% from the field against Minnesota. Both shooting percentages are higher than the 46.5% average that puts New York third in the W in field goal shooting percentage.

Breanna Stewart scored at least 20 points in both games. She scored 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field in the win against Las Vegas while Sabrina Ionescu led the team with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field and 5-of-13 shooting from the 3-point line.

Stewart carried the offensive load in the win against Minnesota. She scored 36 points on 14-of-19 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 shooting from the 3-point line while all the other Liberty starters reached double figures.

Azzi Fudd’s return to New York

While Dallas made a statement in its first trip to New York, Azzi Fudd also made a statement with a 24-point performance off the bench. She went 9-of-15 from the field and 6-of-12 from the 3-point line. The performance led to Fudd being put into the starting lineup in the next game and has remained in the starting five since.

In the win against Toronto, Fudd scored 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field and 5-of-11 from the 3-point line. She came close to her performance in New York. The performance against Toronto was the second time she attempted more than 10 3-pointers in a game. The increase in shooting showed Fudd’s willingness to shoot from beyond the arc. Dallas needs her to keep shooting because the team ranks ninth with a 33.5% shooting percentage while averaging 24.6 attempted threes per game.

Starters contributing on offense

Before the win against the Tempo, Dallas had thrilling games that came down to the final minutes. Paige Bueckers was the reason for those wins as she made clutch basket after clutch basket, but she was able to rest in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter in the win against Toronto. Bueckers finished with 22 points and seven assists while the Dallas starters all reached double figures.

Fudd scored 17 and Jessica Shepard scored 14 while Awak Kuier and Arike Ogunbowale both scored 10 points.

Kuier is more of a defensive presence, but she showcased her offensive abilities against the Tempo. She reached double figures for the fourth time this season. Kuier went 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the 3-point line.

Having her contribute to the offense along with the other starters presented a tough offense for Toronto to guard. It also alleviated the pressure from Bueckers and gave the Wings a calm fourth quarter.
