Boat hits shoal in St. Lawrence River, 2 hospitalized

  • July 7, 2026

TOWN OF CLAYTON, New York (WWNY) – Two people were taken to hospitals after the boat they were in struck a shoal in the St. Lawrence River over the holiday weekend.

According to New York State Park Police, the boat carrying four people hit Chapman Shoal near Clayton at around 11:25 p.m. Saturday.

Injuries and hospitalizations

The 32-year-old operator and a 40-year-old passenger suffered head injuries. Their names were not released.

The operator was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. The passenger was transported to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

Both patients were in stable condition Monday, officials said.

Rescue and recovery

Jefferson County officials said a passing boat rescued the people on the damaged vessel and brought them to the dock at 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, where emergency medical services workers were standing by.

A barge removed the damaged boat Sunday, officials said.

Park police said the incident is under investigation.
