BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Jeremy Francou had an asbolute dream of an evening, Alex Hall broke the club record for career assists, and the Vermont Green men’s team wrapped up USL-2’s Northeast Division title with a dominant 6-2 win over Connecticut Rush Tuesday at Virtue Field.
Francou got the party started less than two minutes in, added two more before the break, and slammed home two more in the second half for a total of five on the day, a new record for a single game in the club’s five-year history.
“It feels great, of course,” Francou said after the game. “First time in my career, I think. It’s a really nice feeling to help the team and could have scored maybe seven, but five is already good, so I’m pretty happy with that.”
More importantly, the win sealed the deal on a second straight division title, one that will guarantee the team a spot in USL-2’s national round of 32 a week from Friday without the need to play their way in earlier in the week.
“Just really happy,” head coach Chris Taylor said after the game. “We wanted the Northeast division last year more than anything and to be able to retain it the way we’ve done it…just an incredible performance by the guys.”
VGFC has put in a bid to host round of 32 and 16 games, and those honors will be awarded by the league this coming weekend.
