1. City reopens some streets as crews work to stabilize Midtown building

City officials have reduced the frozen zone around the unstable Midtown building, reopening portions of Second and Third avenues while stabilization work continues.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for several nearby buildings as engineers shore up compromised structural columns. Officials say the building has shown no recent movement, no injuries have been reported and crews will continue working over the coming days.

2. DSNY gets green light to put stickers on cars blocking street cleaning

The Department of Sanitation could soon place warning stickers on cars that fail to move for alternate-side parking after the City Council approved repealing a 2012 ban on the practice.

Supporters say the stickers will improve street cleaning and encourage compliance, while lawmakers are also pushing for cameras on street sweepers to automate enforcement. The sticker policy will take effect once Mayor Zohran Mamdani signs the bill.

3. ‘Dangerous’ structural problems eyed at Midtown skyscraper

Engineers believe the additional floors being added to the residential conversion at 235 E. 42nd St. may have overloaded the building’s structure, causing columns to bend and multiple floors to cave.

The building had previously received several Department of Buildings violations, while workers described seeing cracking windows, falling concrete and bending beams.
