A man was arrested in connection with a shooting in Coney Island that wounded eight people, including four children, on the Fourth of July, the NYPD announced on Wednesday.
Police wrote on X that 44-year-old Robert Smith has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder.

The NYPD has arrested and charged 44-year-old Robert Smith for shooting eight people including four kids last Saturday night July 4th, in Coney Island.
He is being charged with multiple counts of attempted murder.

Authorities said a masked gunman opened fire into a residential building’s courtyard near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Police said a 21-year-old woman was critically injured after she was shot in the chest. A 6-year-old boy was shot in the stomach, and a 7-year-old, a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old were also injured in the shooting, according to authorities. Police said the other victims were adults.
The NYPD said last week it was investigating whether the shooting was gang-related. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch added that the incident happened days after a fatal gang-related shooting on the same block.
A gun was recovered at the scene, according to authorities.
It’s unclear when Smith will appear in court.
