The Town of Manlius has unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium on data processing centers and commercial cryptocurrency mining operations.
“With Central New Yorkers struggling with higher utility bills and outages, now is the time to press pause on the exploitation of small and rural towns by Silicon Valley developers who make big promises but leave local communities footing the bill,” Manlius Town Supervisor Sara Billinger said in a press release.
Twenty-eight large data centers are to be built in New York state, Bollinger says, which are set to require nearly 10,000 megawatts of energy from the state’s power grid.
“This is not the kind of development we want here in Manlius. As the Town of Manlius rewrites its zoning code, updates its comprehensive plan, and studies future development in the Genesee-Burdick Corridor, it is more important than ever that we decide our own future and ensure that development benefits everyone in our community,” she said.
