The New York State champion advances to the Metro Region, where it faces champions from nearby states and jurisdictions, such as New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island, depending on the division and current alignment.
Finally, the Metro Region champion earns a berth in the Little League World Series. The Little League World Series has grown into an international tournament featuring 20 teams: 10 from the United States and 10 representing regions across the globe.
Brooklyn-born Head Coach Jesus Estaba has been coaching Little League for decades. He told the Brooklyn Eagle that the team got “a little rattled” in their last contest, especially after the first inning when Greenwich Village scored four runs.
“We couldn’t bounce back,” Estaba said. “It happens. Our pitchers couldn’t throw strikes either, which doesn’t help, and we ended up giving up a lot, but we have to look forward to the next contest.”
Estaba has high hopes for advancing to the Sectional Tournament. “I think our chances are pretty good. I have a lot of faith and belief in Brooklyn West.”
“These guys have worked so hard this year, and it’s the closest we’ve ever come in this series. You never lose confidence in these kids. Bottom line: We have one more game, and we are certainly going to give it our all,” Estaba said.
The closest Greenwich Village Little League has come to the Little League World Series was in 2024, when its 12U — 12 years old or younger — All-Star team made a historic run to the Sectional Championship level, just one step before the New York State tournament.
Greenwich Village also once defeated the South Shore Little League team in the sectional tournament — a notable achievement, as South Shore is one of the strongest programs in the region. It ultimately fell short in the sectional championship round and did not advance.
