Groundbreaking ceremony held for new 2 World Trade Center

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the new 2 World Trade Center building.

According to officials, 2 World Trade Center will be the final commercial office tower to stand on the World Trade Center Campus. The building will become the new global headquarters for American Express. 

The project is expected to create more than 3,200 construction jobs and will invest almost $6 billion in New York City’s economy, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at the groundbreaking ceremony Thursday. It is expected to be completed in 2031.

According to Mamdani, once the building is finished, it is expected to support more than 20,000 jobs in the city. 

“When American Express moves in, this headquarters will contribute roughly $11.4 billion towards our economy, including nearly $250 million in tax revenue that will go towards paving potholes, improving schools and planting trees,” Mamdani said at the groundbreaking ceremony.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, American Express will be the only owner and occupant of the building.

“From the union labor who will build this remarkable tower, to the thousands of American Express employees who will work here for generations to come, 2 World Trade Center will be a shining symbol of the resilience, excellence and opportunity that defines Lower Manhattan,” Gov. Kathy Hochul wrote in a statement.
