STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In recent days, meteorologists have been monitoring the potential for storms in New York City Friday afternoon, according to Matt Benz, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
Although that storm threat has decreased, Saturday may now bring about downpours.
“I still think there could be a shower or thunderstorm,” Benz said of Friday’s forecast. “You know, there’s enough moisture in the air that it could produce a downpour, that’s probably about it here though for today for the city.”
If isolated storms were to form Friday, it could be a wet system that brings rain to one borough but completely misses another. Benz believes that the threat of thunderstorms on Friday will likely range from sometime after 3 or 4 p.m. through 9 or 10 p.m.
Saturday’s forecast looks more “interesting” and could feature a higher chance of a thunderstorm beginning in the late morning hours.
“Probably not looking at severe weather, but downpours will be the main concern with anything,” added Benz.
The latest trend indicates that Saturday’s storms could be more widespread than anything that forms on Friday. The threat will extend from 11 a.m. through the afternoon hours, clearing out around 6 or 7 p.m.
“And it could be done earlier than that, but that’s about the latest that it would be sticking around,” Benz explained.
Looking beyond Saturday, city residents can expect a stretch of dry weather continuing into next week.
