BOROUGHWIDE — THE ANDREW CARNEGIE FOUNDATION has awarded the Brooklyn Public Library a two-year grant of $1 million, BPL announced Friday.
The grant will enhance the library’s services for immigrants, and help teens with schoolwork and college planning.
BPL plans to expand English language and citizenship classes, legal aid clinics, hiring events and coaching for immigrant job seekers and entrepreneurs. For teens, BPL will host a college fair and hire two part-time college coaches to assist with college applications, financial aid and test prep. BPL also plans to partner with The Opportunity Network for college and career access services.
The grant will help ensure that “all New Yorkers can advance their educational and economic goals,” said BPL President and CEO Linda Johnson.
“People come to libraries to build the knowledge and skills they need to participate fully in civic and economic life,” said Carnegie Foundation’s Ambika Kapur. “Brooklyn Public Library has been doing that work for generations.”
