Jay-Z returned home to New York on Friday night with a sold-out performance at Yankee Stadium, launching the first of a three-night residency celebrating the landmark albums that have defined his three-decade career.
The opening show honored the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, with a performance that blended nostalgia, surprise guest appearances and tributes to New York hip-hop.
Jay-Z opened the concert with “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” joined by his wife, Beyoncé. He also performed fan favorites from Reasonable Doubt, including “Brooklyn’s Finest,” while paying tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G.
One of the night’s biggest surprises came when Nas joined Jay-Z onstage for a three-song performance, marking another chapter in the longtime collaborators’ shared hip-hop history.
Blue Ivy Carter also made a special appearance, taking a seat at the piano during Jay-Z’s performance of “Feelin’ It.”
The celebration continued with appearances by Alicia Keys, Memphis Bleek and Jaz-O, highlighting artists who have played significant roles throughout Jay-Z’s career.
Fans traveled from across the country to attend the historic performance, filling Yankee Stadium for the opening night of the three-show run.
The concert also sparked conversation on social media after Jay-Z debuted a closely cropped haircut reminiscent of the look he wore during the Reasonable Doubt era.
The residency continues Saturday with a concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. The final show is scheduled for Sunday.
