An 8-year-old boy was killed in Brooklyn Park Friday afternoon after being hit by a pickup truck while riding an electric scooter, police say.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Candlewood Drive and Brunswick Avenue North.
When Brooklyn Park officers arrived, they found out the boy had been hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer.
The driver had called 911 and was still at the scene when they arrived. They are also cooperating with the investigation.
Neighbors and friends gathered Friday evening along Candlewood Drive, still in shock after the death of the young boy, family members identified as 8-year-old Muad Mohamed.
“We’re really sad and upset when we saw him,” said the boy’s 12-year-old brother Mugesir. “Right now, we’re getting a little better.”
5 Eyewitness News spoke with the boy’s father, Abdurez Yusuf, a truck driver, through a translator.
“He was out at work, and he was 90 miles away from home, and his wife called and told him exactly what happened,” a family member says.
13-year-old Emmanuel Davis was riding his electric scooter when he heard what happened.
“I think it’s really sad that it was an 8-year-old who died,” he said quietly. “I really hope his family can like recover and heal.”
The crash was less than a block away from Muad’s home.
“He was trying to ride over to the park so he could play in the park,” Mugesir says.
A new study, by the AAA recommends several steps to better protect young riders, including school-based training and improved access to safety gear.
The group reports more than 1100 people in the state were treated for e-bike and e-scooter injuries in the spring and summer of 2025.
More than 100 were hospitalized.
Lawmakers are now weighing new safety requirements for e-scooter riders under age 18.
Davis says he doesn’t know any details about what happened, but he hopes kids are keeping safe.
“I think you should be really cautious about what you’re doing, like new helmets, extra protection,” he notes. “(Safety) depends on how you use it, depending on speed and how responsible you are with it.”
Authorities are still investigating what exactly led up to the crash.
Minnesota State Patrol is helping with the accident reconstruction.
Mugesir says even after his family’s loss, he’s concerned about the safety of other children.
“Don’t let your kids out all by themselves outside,” he says. “Or something bad will happen.”
Brooklyn Park Police issued this statement:
“Our heart goes out to the family of this young boy in their time of grief. We urge parents and youth to take the dangers of e-scooters and bikes seriously. Too many of our young people are harmed or taken from us too early because of accidents on these electric vehicles. Please talk to your children and keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.”
