“That’s a good way to start.”
That’s how Jay-Z addressed an electric crowd moments after performing “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” the lead song off “Reasonable Doubt,” his debut record, as it celebrated its 30th anniversary. It wasn’t just because the 45,000 fans at Yankee Stadium were excited to see the Brooklyn native on stage for the first of three monumental nights at the famed ballpark; it was because of who he brought along with him. The song originally featured Mary J. Blige, but for his rendition, his wife, Beyoncé, stepped in. Judging by the eruption of noise that echoed throughout the Bronx as she took the stage, “a good way to start” was an understatement.
Over more than two bombastic hours, Jay-Z30 was a night filled with surprises, celebration and nostalgia. From the opening video, which featured Beyoncé shaving Jay-Z’s hair while sitting in the Yankee Stadium seats, fans were treated to a very sentimental Hov, now 56. While there weren’t many outfit changes throughout the night, we did see a few classic Jay-Z looks. He came out sporting a Yankees jacket, but took it off after the first song and later sported a Yankees fitted cap, white tee, bulletproof vest, and Timberlands. It was a classic onstage look for a performer who has scarcely played live over the last eight years (his last studio LP was “4:44″ in 2017).

The massive stage that took up most of center field featured an equally large LED screen that changed from old footage throughout his storied 30-year career to new original content and even music videos from the “Reasonable Doubt” era. Such was the case during “Brooklyn’s Finest,” where Jay-Z was joined virtually by the late The Notorious B.I.G. The stage also had bleacher seats, which made the lucky fans who had those seats feel like they were part of the performance.
When it was released in 1996, “Reasonable Doubt” had a famously slow start, but its impact and legacy live on. “43,000 sold the first week to 45,000 in front of Yankee Stadium… Culture always wins,” remarked Jay-Z, noting what were low sales at the time. But this wouldn’t be your typical album anniversary, where an artist plays a specific album in full from start to finish — Jay-Z isn’t your typical artist. From Beyoncé’s surprise appearance during the opening number, you could tell Jay-Z had no plans to make the night remotely predictable. After performing “Dead Presidents” and “Dead Presidents II,” which famously samples fellow rap icon Nas, Jay-Z brought out his New York brother, who was hilariously decked out in all Mets gear. They performed not one, but three Nas classics: “The World Is Yours,” “N.Y. State of Mind,” and “Where I’m From.”
Back in May, Jay-Z made a headlining appearance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, marking his first solo return to the stage since 2019. These three Yankee Stadium dates, along with stadium shows in London, Paris, and Los Angeles, mark his first official tour since 2018’s “On the Run II Tour,” which he co-headlined with Beyoncé. Getting to witness the return of one of hip-hop’s greatest artists in one of the world’s most famous venues was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and fans treated it as such. Like last summer’s Oasis 25th anniversary tour, fans embraced the spectacle of the night. Men could be seen sporting their freshest Nike Air Force 1s, fitted Yankees hats, and vintage S. Carter jerseys. Women were dressed for a night at the club, sporting looks from the ’90s and early 2000s. They stood in endless lines for exclusive merch, including $400 Yankees jerseys, which were also available at pop-up experiences in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The most memorable moments of the night were also the most poignant, like when Jay-Z brought out longtime collaborator Memphis Bleek for their song “Coming of Age.”
“That’s the definition of loyalty right there,” said Jay-Z following their performance together.
Or later in the night, when he brought out his mentor Jaz-O.
“When I was a young boy fooling around in Marcy, doing whatever I was doing, this young man’s house was where we would go to practice our routines, do all our little writing, and sharpen our skills. If you’re going to give anybody credit for me being on this stage tonight, give it to that man, Jaz-O.”
But outside of Queen Bey’s opening appearance, the night will most likely be remembered for another Carter’s stage presence. After the medley of songs with Nas, a video interlude appeared on the screen showing footage of Jay-Z with his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, practicing piano while the 2012 song “Glory,” released two days after her birth, played through the speakers. It was then that Blue Ivy, 14, appeared onstage in front of the piano and played alongside her father for a rendition of “Feelin’ It.” (She also appeared on Beyoncé’s last two tours).

As the night was coming to a close, Jay-Z dedicated the song “Regrets” to his mother.
“She told me that you could be anything, and I really believed those were her words,” he said. “I didn’t know it was a cliché saying. I thought she was telling me that. Because I had so much trust in her, I really believed I could do anything. A testament to why I am standing on this stage tonight is Gloria Carter.”

But the night wouldn’t end there. In fact, even the surprise encore of Alicia Keys performing a solo cover of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” followed by her and Jay-Z’s smash hit “Empire State of Mind,” wouldn’t be the end of the show.
For the hundreds of fans walking out of the stadium a bit too early, trying to catch the train or an Uber home, they would hear in the distance Jay-Z continue the party with a massive medley of hits and deep cuts. If you’re attending one of the next two nights, maybe don’t rush to get out of the stadium, and plan for a long, but unforgettable, night.
