Eighty-two members of the Kingston High School Class of 2026 earned the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness.

The figure represented 20.1% of the graduating class.

Kingston High offers numerous opportunities for students to engage in civic learning and community involvement. They include social studies electives, student government, Model United Nations, service organizations, and other extracurricular activities that help students develop the knowledge and experiences recognized by the seal.

The seal is awarded to students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in civic knowledge, civic skills, civic mindset, and civic experiences. Overseen at Kingston High by teacher Marc Christian, the program recognizes students who have demonstrated an understanding of civic responsibility, civic values, and participatory government.

The distinction appears on a student’s high school diploma and transcript, signaling to colleges, universities, and future employers that the student has completed meaningful civic engagement experiences, including action projects focused on civics or social justice.

To earn the seal, students must meet all requirements for a New York state local or Regents diploma and accumulate six points through a combination of civic knowledge and civic participation experiences. Students must earn at least two points in civic knowledge and two points in civic participation, with additional opportunities available through capstone projects.

The New York State Education Department established the Seal of Civic Readiness to encourage students to become informed, engaged citizens and recognize the value of civic participation and scholarship.
