The Brooklyn Park Post 630 legion baseball team continued their regular season schedule last week, playing two games against familiar foes as the post season approaches.
Brooklyn Park entered last week with a 4-5 record. The Pirates began their season with a 4-3 win over Providence Academy, before losing four-straight. The response to that run was strong, with Brooklyn Park winning three of their last four games.
Brooklyn Park began last week with a 6-0 loss to Anoka at home July 7. Pitcher Cooper Peterson got the Pirates off to a solid start with two shutout innings. Anoka finally struck in the top of the third, loading the bases. Even then, however, Peterson and his crew managed the situation and allowed only one run with the help of first baseman Will Whiteford. Brooklyn Park remained unable to get a run of their own, but the gap was small.
It remained 1-0 after the fourth inning, before Anoka found a second run in the top of the fifth. Peterson found two outs for the Pirates, before Anoka got two batters on bases and then worked their way to a 2-0 lead. A tag by shortstop Kennedy Capp at second base prevented more damage.
Beau Bratsch hit a single in the bottom of the fifth and was joined by Capp and Cullen O’Rourke through a walk and single, but Anoka handled the pressure with two outs already locked in to keep it at 2-0.
The sixth inning went by quickly, in part due to three strikeouts for Peterson, before Anoka struck gold in the top of the seventh and added four runs.
Brooklyn Park fought hard to make something happen in their final run of at-bats, but Anoka kept things clean for a big win.
Another action packed battle awaited on July 8 as the Pirates lost 13-5 to Elk River on the road.
The Elks surged ahead to 5-0 in the bottom of the first, then 7-0 in the bottom of the second. Brooklyn Park showed some spirit, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Adam Aasen hit an RBI double for Jason Knutson, before Aasen and Capp were brought home by Charlie Aasen’s double.
Elk River responded with three more runs to make it 10-3, though Brooklyn Park stayed loud with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Jestin Kokotovich hit a single and then found his way to second base, getting brought home by an Adam Aasen single. Capp then hit a single to get Peterson home, making it 10-5.
There was to be no comeback from there, but the Pirates left having shown a real battle through the middle of the game.
The Brooklyn Park Post 630 Pirates will play twice the following week to conclude their regular season schedule, traveling to Spring Lake Park and Champlin Park on Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14, respectively.
