Bicyclists of all ages ruled the road on Sunday, July 12, during the 63rd Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix.
Racers competed for a piece of the $17,500 cash purse, state champion medals and jerseys. The Southern California/Nevada Cycling Association and Northern California/Nevada Cycling Association Combined State Championships also took place alongside the Grand Prix.

Local cycling legend Ted Ernst, known as the grandfather of cycling in the South Bay, started the event in 1962, creating the oldest single-day race in the U.S. to be held on the same course.
Over its more than 60-year history, the 1.3-mile cycling grand prix has grown to draw around 1,000 racers per year, from preschoolers to competitive cyclists.
Ernst was inducted into the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2006 for his efforts in promoting the sport, including founding the South Bay Wheelmen, which many national cycling team members have sprouted from, according to the hall of fame’s website.
