1. Hochul enacts first statewide data center moratorium

Gov. Kathy Hochul is imposing a first-in-the-nation statewide moratorium on new large-scale data centers while New York reviews their environmental impacts.

An executive order will pause permits for up to a year for projects requiring 50 megawatts or more of power as the state develops new regulations. Hochul also wants developers to cover added energy costs or generate their own power.

2. Mamdani announces new tech crews to make city services easier

Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a new initiative aimed at speeding up city government by deploying five Public Interest Technology, or “PIT,” crews made up of engineers, designers and data experts.

The teams will focus on improving city services, starting with an online portal to help New Yorkers cancel unwanted subscriptions and file complaints.

3. Study finds parking availability in the city largely unchanged after congestion toll

The parking study was mandated by the law that created congestion pricing and looked at parking both inside and at several points outside the Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ) about nine to 10 months before and nine to 10 months after the start of the toll.

The study, which used human, stationary and mobile cameras to collect hundreds of thousands of car movements, found drivers did not park on the street outside the zone and take transit or walk into the zone to avoid the toll.
