How permanent daylight saving time would affect New York

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A bill to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide moved on to the Senate after being passed by the House.

The Sunshine Protection Act would make daylight saving time the permanent standard time, rather than changing clocks twice per year.

There would be no more “fall back” in November, as states like Arizona or Hawaii already practice year-round.

Almost 20 states have already passed legislation to allow daylight saving time to act as their standard time if the bill becomes federal law. But what about New York? What happens to your days in the winter?

Well, there would be no more sunsets before your child gets off the school bus, or a pitch-black commute home from work. But your commute to work and school drop-off may look a little different.

How would NY days change with permanent daylight saving time?

New York summers would look exactly as they do now if daylight saving time becomes permanent. However, winters would be greatly affected by the change.

According to data from timeanddate.com, the latest sunrise in New York City would be 8:20 a.m. if daylight saving time were permanent. With how things currently stand, the latest sunrise after DST ends is 7:20 a.m.

The earliest sunset would be 5:28 p.m. So, no more midnight-feeling drives home from work. At least you’ll get to say goodnight to the sun before it goes away on a cold winter evening.

New York has yet to pass Senate Bill 3380, which would give the full go-ahead for permanent daylight saving time if it gets signed into law federally.

The bill currently sits in the Senate committee.
