Within this year’s enacted budget, there is a provision that delays until 2029 a report from a state commission to study reparations for slavery in New York.
The idea behind reparations is that the legacy of discrimination against Black people in the United States continues to have substantial impacts today.
A separate report, out from the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Legal Defense Fund released this week, shows that the median wealth of Black New Yorkers is nearly 15 times less than the median wealth of white New Yorkers. And there’s much more.
