Fair Haven, N.Y. — A 70-year-old man drowned Tuesday afternoon after entering the water from a boat in Little Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario, according to New York State Police.
Police said the man entered the water to cool off, but high winds caused the boat to drift away, leaving him unable to get back aboard. During the incident, the man went underwater and did not resurface.
A 69-year-old woman entered the water in an attempt to help him but was later rescued by a nearby boater. The man’s body was recovered by the NYSP Underwater Recovery Team following a search involving multiple agencies, including local fire departments, sheriff’s offices and the U.S. Coast Guard.
