NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – It’s like an HPD inspection on-demand. 

The Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants is rolling out a new system that will allow tenants to schedule HPD inspections at their apartments, rather than playing a game of roulette.

As it stands, when a tenant reports an issue to 311, HPD inspectors will just show up. It results in missed opportunities and issues unresolved, tenants say. Now, tenants will receive a text message with instructions to schedule the appointment. 

Cea Weaver, director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, said the new system could start as soon as this fall. Later, the city may explore an online scheduling system, she said. 

“These improvements aim to reduce the percentage of complaints closed when an inspector is unable to access an apartment, which, in turn, is expected to decrease overall complaints from the same apartments over time,” the report reads.
