1. Mayor opts out of city’s matching funds program

The next mayoral election may be three years away, but Mayor Zohran Mamdani is already at work raising campaign cash for his reelection, and yesterday he confirmed he will opt out of the city’s matching funds program — a move that immediately came under fire from good-government groups.

Mamdani won last year’s mayoral race with the help of the program, which matches small-dollar donations from city residents $8-to-$1 with public funds.

2. Funeral held for former college basketball player killed in Harlem shooting

The funeral for Brooklyn native Kinu Rochford was standing room only at a mosque on the corner of Bedford Avenue and Fulton Street. 

Hundreds of people — from all faith backgrounds — attended to show their love for Rochford. He was shot and killed Friday night on a Harlem basketball court.

3. Hochul says data center moratorium is an effort to protect large job-creators like Micron

Energy is a finite resource. In New York state, the bulk electric system is managed by the Independent System Operator (NYISO), which has recently warned that our power grid is at an “inflection point.” While the state currently has enough energy, there are so many industries in the “queue” hoping to draw upon the grid, that the state’s future energy supply is in jeopardy unless we build more power. 

At its core, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s moratorium on hyperscale data centers is an effort to manage what is a scarce public resource. 

She said in an interview with “Capital Tonight” that in weighing the pros and cons of data centers against other large load users like Micron, data centers come up short. They don’t create anywhere near the number of permanent jobs that a semi-conductor facility like Micron will.
