Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker submitted his resignation “first thing Wednesday,” according to a report by The New York Post.
Tucker, the 35th New York City fire commissioner, will step away from his role leading the FDNY on Dec. 19, after more than 12 months holding his position, sources reportedly told Post.
Sources also told the Post that Tucker would return to heading private security firm, T&M, which he led before becoming fire commissioner.
Tucker, a businessman, philanthropist and father, has lived in New York all his life. He was raised in Manhattan and attended George Washington University. Tucker also went to law school at the Pace University School of Law at night as he worked as the special assistant to the late Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.
Earlier this year, Tucker made it his mission to visit every firehouse and EMS station on Staten Island. He previously explained that the purpose of the boroughwide visit was to gain a better understanding of the department on the Island and the individuals that work day-in and day-out to protect this city.
“I think it’s super important to meet with the members both on EMS side and on the fire operations side,” Tucker said in January. “You really get a flavor of what is going on in this department in a cultural way, in an operational way, when you sit in the kitchens of our firehouses and EMS stations and you listen to the members. And I got to thank all of the members for welcoming me the way they have and being as honest as they’ve been about some of the challenges that the department faces, definitely on the EMS side, and so I’m working to address those.”
During that visit, Tucker also made a stop at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze to wish a happy birthday to Ian Pereles, a 2-year-old boy who was critically injured in a Graniteville fire back on Jan. 17.
In addition to his efforts personally meet the Island’s first responders, Tucker also presided over FDNY promotional ceremonies held in the borough.
The Advance/SILive.com reached out to the FDNY for confirmation, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
