Police say inheritance dispute preceded fatal shooting of woman in the Bronx

BRONX, N.Y. — A 58-year-old Mount Vernon man has been charged with murder after authorities say he fatally shot his niece outside her vehicle in the Bronx, bringing an end to a manhunt that lasted two days. Police arrested Michael Foster on Wednesday night in connection with the killing of 39-year-old Julia Anderson, Gothamist reported.

Investigators allege Anderson was preparing to get into her Jeep in the Wakefield neighborhood Monday evening when she was shot several times. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found her critically injured near the vehicle. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries, The Journal News reported.

Law enforcement sources told multiple outlets the shooting may have stemmed from a disagreement involving a home the pair shared in Mount Vernon that had become the subject of an inheritance dispute. Authorities have not publicly discussed a possible motive beyond the criminal charges filed in the case.

Following Foster’s arrest, investigators executed a search at a residence in Mount Vernon believed to be connected to both the suspect and the victim. Crime scene personnel were seen removing potential evidence from the home as the investigation continued.

Police said Foster was charged with murder, manslaughter and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was being held pending arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.

Family members described Anderson as a caring woman who worked as a disability aide. Her mother said the 39-year-old was approaching her 40th birthday and had left for work as usual before her life was cut short.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the fatal confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing.
