Police in the Bronx arrested an unlicensed doctor on Sunday after a woman died in their care, it was reported.

According to police sources, the doctor — who was said to not have a medical license issued in the United States — was allegedly performing an unknown procedure at around midday on July 19 inside the Bereshit Lifestyle Center, located at 3190 Riverdale Ave. in Spuyten Duyvil, on a 27-year-old woman when something went wrong, and she lost consciousness.

Law enforcement sources said the victim arrived via private means at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital at about 1 p.m. on July 19; hospital staff reported that she had become unresponsive. Despite their efforts, the woman could not be saved, and was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not yet released her idenitty, pending family notification.

Her body was transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Officers from the 50th Precinct responded to Allen Hospital after staff reported the death as suspicious. Upon further investigation, they took the unlicensed doctor into custody for allegedly performing a botched procedure. Charges against the physician were still pending as of Monday morning. 

According to the clinic’s website, the Bereshit Lifestyle Center focuses on holistic and alternative health practices.
