Songbook Sundays, created
and hosted by Deborah Grace Winer, will continue August 9 with a Tony
Bennett Centennial Celebration at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club.
Celebrating the late jazz icon will be Grammy winner Debby Boone, jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli, rising artist David Marino, and Grammy winner Billy Stritch (who served as Bennett’s music director), who will also be the evening’s music director. Winer will host the 5 PM and 7:30 PM concerts.
The vocalists will be backed by Marc MacLean on drums, Caylen Bryant on bass, and Jacob Chung on saxophone.
Attendees can expect to hear such Bennett classics as “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “I’ve Got the World on a String,” and more.
Songbook Sundays, now in its fifth year, premiered in spring 2022 with Got Gershwin followed by celebrations of Cole
Porter, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Lerner and
Loewe, Fats Waller, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Cy Coleman, Frank
Loesser, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael,
Jule Styne, Jimmy Van Heusen, Leonard Bernstein, and Dorothy Fields. It will continue October 4 with a celebration of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
