A new memoir by the city’s first female lifeguard chief is making a splash.
It’s not only a coming-of-age story set on the beach, it also exposes alleged longtime union corruption, and is putting a spotlight on the secret culture of lifeguards, who used to throw keg parties for beachgoers who drowned on their watch.
Janet Fash worked for decades at Rockaway Beach, the city’s only ocean-facing beach where all the action happened during work and after hours — making it the place to be for city lifeguards who wanted a balance of danger and fun.
In her new book, “Lifeguard: A Love Story,” published by Simon & Schuster, she recounts her experience as a woman working her way up in a male-dominated industry and joins me now to give her take on today’s beach safety.
