Old Stone House awarded $4 million for Battle of Brooklyn exhibit

PARK SLOPE — THE OLD STONE HOUSE on Third Street has been awarded a grant of almost $4 million from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of a package that supports educational, public and scholarly programs enhancing the United States’ 250th birthday. The NEH on Wednesday announced a total of $41.4 million grants for 81 humanities projects across the U.S.

Several of these grants will support programs designed to enhance ongoing national celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. NEH funding for these projects responds to the Jan. 29, 2025, Presidential Executive Order “Celebrating America’s Birthday,” and is part of the agency’s larger A More Perfect Union initiative.

The Old Stone House of Brooklyn is awarded more than $3.97 million of which it will receive outright funding of $60,000, for its project, “Old Stone House: Witness to War—The Battle of Brooklyn.” The grant will underwrite plans for an expansion and update of a permanent exhibition on the Battle of Brooklyn, including the development of accompanying online interactive materials. Kimberly Maier is the project director.

The Old Stone House’s website has announced this year’s Battle of Brooklyn commemoration for Sunday, Aug. 22. This strategic battle took place on Aug. 27, 1776.
