Jawbreaker the Musical will premiere in Los Angeles this fall with a workshop production at Hollywood’s Hudson Theatre, running September 4-20. Matt DiCarlo is directing.
Based on Darren Stein’s film of the same title, Jawbreaker the Musical follows the rise and unraveling of a ruthless clique of teenage girls whose reign of power takes a deadly turn. The musical adaptation will feature a book by Stein, music by Jeff Thomson, lyrics by Jordan Mann, and choreography by Jay Jackson (also known as RuPaul’s Drag Race star Laganja Estranja). The musical is produced by Knot Free Productions.
The cast will be led by the film’s original star Rebecca Gayheart, returning to the work 27 years after starring in the film, now playing Principal Sherwood. The cast will also include Aj Paramo as Fern Mayo, Méami as Courtney Shayne, Kristen Seggio as Julie Freeman, Jane Papageorge as Marcie Fox, Will Riddle as Zack Tartak, and Mireya Zoé Nevel as Elizabeth Purr, Brandon Keith Rogers as Dane Sanders, and ensemble members Dominic DeCicco, Mitchell Gerrard Johnson, Kayla Quiroz, and Avery Rehl.
“Jawbreaker has always had the heightened, timeless quality of a musical and getting to re-imagine Fern Mayo’s story in the current cultural climate allows for deeper emotion and higher stakes. The meaning these characters have had for people over the years, especially the queer community, has really informed how we’re making the story impactful for today,” said Stein in a statement.
