With new funding, Liberty Avenue is getting seriously cleaned up.
Earlier this week, signs began going up around the bustling corridor in Richmond Hill announcing that the city would now begin conducting weekly street cleaning efforts.
The move was part of a new allocation secured in the most recent budget by the area’s city councilman, Ty Hankerson (D-Jamaica).
“For years, residents and small businesses have been calling for stronger and more consistent cleaning along Liberty Avenue,” Hankerson said in a statement.
The latest budget included a new baseline funding of $1 million to conduct street cleanings in the area, as well as an additional $470,000 for this current year for employment groups such as ACE, CEO and NYC H2O to support graffiti cleanup and other sanitation services.
“My office made sure Liberty Avenue was a major focus in this budget, not only for this year, but as an ongoing priority. This funding will help deliver the reliable sanitation service our community has long deserved,” said Hankerson.
Clive Destiny, the councilman’s deputy chief of staff, told the Chronicle that signs announcing the cleanup effort were installed along Liberty Avenue for the first time this week.
“Liberty Avenue has been lacking,” Destiny said. “It has been one of the largest complaints from the community that Liberty Avenue, one of our busiest business corridors has been just, you know, filthy for a very long time,” he added.
