All Flock cameras in Syracuse have been removed

All Flock cameras have been officially removed from the city of Syracuse.

This move comes after the Syracuse Common Council voted to remove them earlier this year due to data sharing concerns.

Flock has said it does not share the data without permission from its clients. But last summer, the nonprofit news outlet Central Current revealed the Syracuse Police Department mistakenly opted into data sharing with the national database.

In place of the Flock cameras, the council also approved a contract with Axon license plate readers. Twenty-six of those will now be installed throughout the city in the coming weeks. The five-year agreement, which comes at a cost of $422,000, went into effect March 1.
