The 25-year-old man accused of breaking into the Brooklyn Park homes of two women and sexually assaulting them has been charged with 10 crimes ranging from burglary to criminal sexual conduct.
Prosecutors allege that Darius Olson-Baker — who has already been convicted with a litany of crimes — sexually assaulted and attempted to rape two women in a five-day period. His crime spree allegedly started just 10 days after he’d been released from prison.
He was arrested on Wednesday and remains in jail. His bail has been set at $1 million.
Armed Sexual Assault
According to the criminal complaint, on July 17, a woman who lives in the same townhome complex as Olson-Baker awoke to find a man wearing a hoodie tightened around his face and glasses brandishing a handgun.
He asked for $100 and began to search her dresser. Later, he forced a leg tie into her mouth, then sexually assaulted and attempted to rape her.
After a struggle, he ran from the apartment.
The victim described her assailant as a 5’4 chubby, light-skinned Black man in his 20s.
Five days later, a woman sleeping on her couch awoke to find a man with a handgun who threatened to kill her and her children if she screamed.
He sexually assaulted and attempted to rape the woman, eventually leaving the home.
“Victim 2 described Defendant as a light-skinned Black male wearing khaki pants, a black t-shirt, a balaclava ski mask, approximately 5’4, and ‘chubbier,’” the criminal complaint read.
Law enforcement officials from the Brooklyn Park Police Department, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Secret Service formed a task force to investigate the incidents.
Investigators found that Olson-Baker lived near the first victim, fit the description of the assailant and had a history of committing burglaries in the Brooklyn Park area.
“He was adjudicated delinquent of first-degree burglary on four separate occasions in 2015-2019,” the criminal complaint read. “Some of these burglaries were similar in modus operandi; for example, Defendant crawled into bed with a juvenile female and touched her feet.”
The leg tie used in the first assault “yielded a mixture of DNA from which Victim 1 and Defendant’s DNA could not be excluded but from which 99.9% of the world’s population could be excluded.”
Police arrested Olson-Baker on July 22, the same day he allegedly committed the second assault.
His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday, July 24.
